Combat Orientation is mandatory for all new arrivals into Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan. Attendees perform a Physical Fitness Assessment (pushups, crunches, and 1.5 mile run) and all members participating in the fitness assessment must report in Physical Training Uniform (PTU) with ID card. This fitness assessment is not an official physical fitness assessment and will be recorded locally as part of the Commander's fitness program aimed at ensuring all Airmen are healthy and fit for the rigors of combat.
We had to be in place at 0515 (almost got to sleep in!) and we ran "Disney Drive". I was fortunate that the winds were down, the sun was out but not too hot, and they placed the cone incorrectly and I ran less than a mile and a half! The disadvantage was eventhough vehicle traffic is limited during these hours, we still had vehicles driving by and blowing sand in our face! The worst part to the sand is the Army has restricted the wear of sunglasses in the PTU from the hours of 0530-0730!!!
