In the late 1950s, the United States Air Force introduced a new super enlisted grade to replace its warrant officers. This top enlisted grade came to be titled, "Chief Master Sergeant." The word Chief means, "one who is highest in rank or authority." The word Master means, "a teacher or mentor." The word Sergeant means, "any of the noncommissioned officer ranks appointed to a rank conferring leadership." The Chief - typically an elder - was looked on for leadership.
I've had the honor at RAF Lakenheath to work with two Chief Selects and attend their recognition ceremonies...a memorable milestone to reach the Top 1% of the Air Force. This is CMSgt JD Hedden and one of his lovely daughters, Bailey.
