Such a wonderful day visiting Jane Austen sites...it took my passion of her literature to the next level! There are so many amazing photos to share with you...we saw the house where she wrote most of her books (Chawton), where she lived when she was ill (Winchester), and where she was laid to rest at the young age of 41 (Winchester Cathedral). Here are the highlights...
Her house in Chawton has been converted to a Museum. They are preparing for a huge celebration this year commemorating the 200th anniversary of her arrival to Chawton. They really want Colin Firth (Mr Darcy in BBC movie Pride & Prejudice) to be the guest speaker.
We weren't able to take pictures in the house which makes it so hard to capture all the cool things I was able to see. However, the above photo was the table where she wrote...she liked the creaking door to alert her of incoming guests so she could hide her manuscripts. Across the street was a cute tea room, Cassandra's. It was named after her sister.
I ate a yummy Brie & Cranberry sandwich with Peppermint Tea--we sat at the right window.

Cassandra drew (watercolor & pencil) a picture of her sister, Jane Austen. It is now in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
This portrait was quite controversial during an auction. The portrait by English society artist Ozias Humphry was put up for sale by Henry Rice, a distant relative of Jane Austen. Scholars dismissed the authenticity of the portrait.
Winchester Cathedral Library has a silhouette, said to be of Jane Austen - done by herself in 1815.
